Better Enamel With Water Or Solvent?

Enamel is a type of both transparent and opaque paint suitable for painting the most common types of surfaces, be they metals, such as iron or cast iron, or wood. wauwatosa contractors

The main differences between the two types of enamel do not consist in the way of applying them, nor in the surfaces in which they can be applied, in fact both types of enamel are interchangeable in most cases. Now let’s see the main differences so that we can choose according to our needs.

Solvent-Based Enamel

Solvent-based enamel is mainly diluted with chemicals, precisely solvents, such as white petroleum or white spirit. Since generally the thinner used is quite aggressive, I recommend using it mainly for external works, or, if used indoors, to ventilate the room for a couple of hours.

Among its main advantages, it returns a brighter color, which is why it is recommended for bright and reflective finishes. They also have a high hiding power and are generally more durable than water based ones. I recommend it for convenience, because some products of this type allow you to paint the iron in poor condition without having to resort to preventive treatments.

Among its main disadvantages is the very pungent and penetrating odor. But above all it can have a negative impact on human health since these glazes release volatile organic compounds (the so-called VOCs). Solvent-based enamel dries much slower than water-based enamel and, moreover, there is the need to clean the brushes used with solvents, otherwise they will be thrown away.

Water-Based Enamel

Water-based enamels are less aggressive than solvent-based ones, in fact they are very suitable for interior works. However, they are not free from volatile organic compounds but contain a smaller amount.

The advantage of this type of products is that they are more suitable for indoor work precisely because they limit VOCs. They are odorless and generally dry in less time and return better results when used on difficult materials such as aluminum or zinc. Finally, they make cleaning tools very easy, in fact it will be enough to wash them under hot water to clean them.

However, they are not without defects in fact they tend to have a lower covering effect, but above all we must be very careful to use them on surfaces where rust can form precisely because they have a water base.
